When the African prince wishes to marry a white princess, Dolitte ‘bleaches’ him white which in turn produces a strong smell of ‘burning brown paper’.

Terms like ‘snake-eyed’, ‘smelly’ and ‘wild men’ are used for Native Americans and are further described as having black glittering eyes and strange peaked heads.
