1) William II (reigned 1087–1100)

He was the third son of William the Conqueror and Matilda of Flanders. After the death of his father in 1087, William was bequeathed the kingdom of England. William Rufus was famous for his ruddy complexion, and he faced difficult relations with the church during his reign. William was shot by an arrow and died while he was out hunting one day in 1100. It is rumored that the incident could have been an act of assassination was carried out on the orders of William’s younger brother, Henry, who took over the throne as Henry I.
