Walking into a grocery store, aisles are loaded with junk food products. There are innumerable flavors of one product, for instance- Lays or Pringles. The shocking news is that ALL OF THAT only comes from ten main corporations.
Oxfam International made an infographic revealing this astounding fact. The majority of food items that we purchase and consume are manufactured by 10 chief corporations. These big names like PepsiCo and Unilever make more than a billion dollars each day.
That’s what Marx warned us about!
Ever thought that these big corporations have huge responsibilities? We didn’t either, well until now. Primarily, because they have innumerable lives to take care of. They are spread all around the globes and their work touch so many lives. Alexander E.M Hess told USA Today, “These corporations are so powerful that their policies can have a major impact on the diets and working conditions of people worldwide, as well as on the environment.”
Secondly, the customer is getting stronger by the days, all thanks to awareness through social media. The consumer now understands the standard of quality and refuses to compromise.
The “Big 10” of the food industry has to be a lot more responsible and caring towards the planet that they and all of us live on. Some of the big issues that these echelons of corporate world need to be cautious about are:
- Climate Change
- Land Grabs
- Fairness for small-scale businesses
Climate change is no joke, we need to understand the gravity of this problem. Business Insider gave scary details, “the Big 10 emitted 263.7 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions in 2013 and if the companies were a nation, it would be the 25th most polluting country in the world.”
Another problem that these big corporations cause is that they make it almost impossible for new startups to make names for themselves. Consequently, giving rise to poverty.
Honestly, it is quite clear that these corporations are not really concerned about their responsibilities. These capitalists are true to their nature!
It’s next to impossible to wash them out, what we can do is buy less and less of these products. They are not even healthy. Why not eat healthily and buy grocery from the nearest farmer’s market?
Let’s take a step towards change!
