The 12-year-old ukulele player burst into tears and descended on to her knees in shock as host Nick Cannon announced the result on the season 11 finale of the hit NBC talent show. The runner-up was the Clairvoyants, a skilled duo. Magician Jon Dorenbos, who plays for the Philadelphia Eagles, was third for his amazing card tricks.
The gifted young artist described her feelings in the following words. ““Really whenever something like that happens, you’re not really thinking. You’re just like, ‘Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh, this is happening, this is happening, this is happening, this is happening, so it’s really going through me.”
Grace was an all time favorite of the judges and the audiences from her first day so it came off as no surprise when she was crowned the winner. Judge Heidi Klum was ecstatic with her win, predicting Vanderwaal will change the industry.
She said while talking to the news, “There’s only so few people that pop up now and then that can really make a difference, and she will make a difference in music 100 percent.”
She was a frontrunner from the day of her audition where she captivated the audience and the judges when she played ‘I Don’t Know My Name’. The judges were left awestruck by her performance and she was welcomed by a golden buzzer and her audition was watched by a whopping 35.3 million people.
Simon Cowell hailed her as the next Taylor Swift of the music industry. She has been writing songs since she was 3 years old and used her 11th birthday money to buy a ukulele for herself. She learned to play the instrument at the age of 4 through YouTube videos and is also an expert at playing the saxophone.
‘I started playing the piano when I was four but I’ve always sang’
The ukulele is what made her famous, but Grace admitted she only purchased one recently:
‘We actually had a family friend from Brazil stay at our house and she played the ukulele and so I wanted one because she played one.
This young lady is definitely going places and we wish her the best for her future endeavors.
